Short Term Rental Requirements for Keweenaw County

Short Term Rentals in Keweenaw County are regulated by the Keweenaw County Zoning Ordinance as a Conditional Use effective July 1, 2024.

Conditional Use Application forms are available in the Zoning office at the Keweenaw County Courthouse, requests emailed to planning@keweenawcountymi.gov, or online at CLICK HERE.

Operating a Short Term Rental without a valid Conditional Use Permit or outside of the conditions set forth in the KC Zoning Ordinance is a violation of the ordinance and subject to a Municipal Civil Infraction as per 21.2.C of the KCZO.

Keweenaw County Short Term Rental Conditional Use Permit
Dwelling, Short-term Rental: Means a dwelling unit, or portion thereof, that is offered or provided to a guest by a short-term rental owner or operator for a fee for fewer than thirty (30) consecutive nights. They are commonly referred to as vacation rentals. They are a form of tourist or transient accommodations. Short-term rental units be whole house rentals, apartments, condominiums, or individual rooms in homes. For the purpose of administration and enforcement of this title, the terms “overnight rental,” “nightly rental,” and “vacation rental” are interchangeable with short-term rentals. Subleasing or subletting of units for short-term rental is prohibited if the underlying zone prohibits such use. See 10.12.17 for Conditions CLICK HERE
